Hand forged wrought iron chisels (for sale)
This video shows the forging of special wrought iron framing chisels we are now offering for sale on our website. These chisels are my own design, a mixture of Japanese and early American framing chisels. They are made of antique wrought iron which gives the most amazing appearance after acid etching and polishing. Very special tools and process, completely unlike anything else in the world.

      Different forms of a tool evolved in different countries, so we have scottish scythes, english scythes, austrian, russian, swedish, norwegian, finnish, and of course, those evolving in the USA came to be called the AMERICAN scythe. They are all very different in look, form and use but all get the job done.

    Is the large bolt for attaching the scythe to the snath left or right hand thread? I have one that is seized up and I want to make sure that I'm going the right direction to work it loose.

    • @MrChickadee
      @MrChickadee 2 дня назад

      the affixing bolt is normal threaded. only the nibs (handles) are opposite due to the expected twist direction in use. soak in penetrating oil and a vise plus wrench helps break those free.

    Mr. C didn't explain the design. Air is brought in under where the wood is loaded via a grate the wood sits on. Where the wood sits is a "box inside a box" of firebrick inside regular clay brick with a gap (the cardboard, around 1/4 inch) to allow for firebrick expansion. The fire rises to hit the iron cooktop, then "flows" over a brick wall into the back channel where it rises up several feet, then, via a channel, is brought back down, and then up and out of the chimney in the last channel. Only the firebox needs the firebrick. The mortar is 1 part fireclay to 3 parts sand. I would add one part lime or 1/2 part Type N. The firebox should be refractory mortar with very, very thin joints and soaking the firebrick in water before applying mortar.

    really impressive, I plan to do something much simpler, yet similar on my land in the next few years. Really interesting to see how old school techniques do the same thing as modern construction. The footers with vertical stones and gravel are really interesting and it's cool seeing the stone-contact wood getting charred to prevent water from wicking into it instead of using pressure treated lumber. That scribing technique is still used a lot, but rarely on that complex a 3D shape. I'd be tempted to flatten the stone instead but maybe that would take longer or weaken it.
